(Raleigh, NC) – In April 2010, GCFLearnFree.org decided to introduce a brand new initiative, the GCFLearnFree Literacy Project, to better serve the large portion of adults who struggle with reading proficiently. There are over 43 million American adults who cannot read and over 50 million adults who cannot read higher than a fifth grade level. GCFLearnFree.org took action by developing the Reading Program, the goal of which was to expose learners to the 1,000 most common words in the English language in order to improve adult literacy and English-language learning.
In just a little over a year, the Reading Program has reached an important milestone, having launched educational content including all 1,000 words, concluding an intensive work period by GCFLearnFree.org staff.
Utilizing various educational tools, the GCFLearnFree.org Reading program allows learners to explore the sounds of letters and words, see images and videos of words, hear them used in sentences and paragraphs, and practice matching words and sounds. Everything is self-paced and self-directed so that students can choose to focus on the areas that are most important and relevant to learn.
Educational tools within the program assist adult learners with reading exploration, repetition and practice. Learners can explore letters, words, and full texts, view videos, or enjoy the activities, games, and interactives.
“The website is all about exploring words and developing literacy all at the same time. Whether it’s through interactive tools, or video content or even games, the learner gets to choose the path that is best for them. We are pleased we have been able to respond to this National crisis and make literacy programming available for free to those that need it,” states Matt Robinson, GCFLearnFree.org.
Since it’s original launch in April 2010, over 260,000 learners from over 200 countries have used the Reading Program. The top countries served are the United States, India, Colombia, Pakistan and Chile.
