Question:

I have been friends with a guy for around 8 years now and we have a fantastic relationship. However for quite some time now I have developed more feelings for him and I get the sense that he feels the same way, but I don't want to ruin a good friendship. It's funny because a lot of our friends think we should be together too. I would really appreciate any advice as it's killing me and also stopping me from moving on.

Sherri's Answer:

It's easy and very common to turn yourself on to a dear friend if you are tired of dating, being alone or craving, especially when good friends are playing matchmaker behind the scenes. Still, transitioning from a platonic to a romantic relationship is a risk that can be full of rewards but one that should be seriously weighed. Before doing anything, carefully consider why your feelings have changed and make sure it is for the right reasons. Ask yourself these three questions:

1. Would I still have those feelings tomorrow if my dream man came into the picture?

2. Would I be into this guy if I met him at a party or a blind date?

3. What if we did not have any mutual friends?

If you are satisfied with your answers to these question, then I say "go for it girl." If handled maturely, you will have nothing to lose because a strong friendship will remain intact even if the romantic feelings are not mutual. Taking that friendship to a new level should begin with an honest and private discussion that should remain between you and your guy. I caution you to leave your friends out of it or else he may feel sideswiped by you and the rest of the gang posse, which can be damaging to your relationships with both him and your friends while spoiling the positive dynamics of your close circle.
