When Frankel raced his maiden win on 13th August in 2010, the mile long Newmarket race track seemed like a cakewalk to the colt, easily defeating his contender Nathaniel by half a length effortlessly. Nathaniel would later go on to win the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes later in July the following year.
In his next race, he once again romped at the Doncaster tracks at the seven furlongs Frank Whittle Conditions Stakes winning it by a staggering 13 lengths along with a superbly impressive Timeform Rating. Frankel had started in form and maintaining it and this was grabbing the European attention soon after his second victory.
Frankel, a British thoroughbred is by Galileo, 2001 European Champion Three-Year-Old and winner of the Irish Derby, the Epsom Derby and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. His dam was Kind by Danehill who was the leading sire for almost two decades in Australia, Ireland and France.
Frankel started twice more in his two year old season, in the Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes at Ascot where he beat the Klammer who would later go on to win the Horris Hill Stakes and later at the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket again where his victory was somewhat of a miraculous win that left all of European racing world asking for more. Frankel was competed against another unbeaten colt, Middle Park Stakes winner, Dream Ahead and Saamidd who has won the Champagne Stakes. Frankel won the race without any effort or urge from his jockey, Tom Queally by a neat 2 ¼ lengths. This was one of his most crucial and a memorable victory in a span of 9 races and 9 wins.
His first race in the sophomore season was the Greenham Stakes where Frankel maintained his signature racing style without any effort from Queally winning the race from Excelebration who would later win the German 2000 Guineas. Frankel’s 2000 Guineas Stakes was described as a “barely believable” performance when he galloped away from Casamento and established a lead of almost 15 lengths in mid-race while ended up on six lengths lead at the wire.
The next race for Frankel happened to be the St. James Palace Stakes instead of the much anticipated Epsom Derby. However here again, Frankel was subjected to some cut-throat competition which he obviously won over. Another colt, Rerouted, set an early fast pace and a substantial lead but upon being asked by Queally, Frankel not only overtook Rerouted but created his own lead of more than six lengths over the remaining contenders until Zoffany, another long shot race horse began to make up finishing the race with not more than ¾ lengths to go over winner Frankel.
Frankel later started in Sussex Stakes and won it demolishing the five time winner of Grade 1 races, Canford Cliffs. Frankel soon started once again in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes winning it from previously defeated Excelebration and Prix Jacques Le Marois winner, Immortal Verse. Timeform declared him an undefeated star who was now ready to take on international racing, possibly Black Caviar, the other undefeated Australian filly.
Timeform has ranked Frankel as currently the greatest horse in the world at 143 following the all time favourites comprised of Sea Bird, winner of Epsom Derby and Prix de l’Arc denTripmphe (1965) at 145, the highest ever; Brigadier Gerard, winner of 2000 Guineas (1971) and Eclipse Stakes (1972) at 144; and Tudor Minstrel, winner of 2000 Guineas (1947) at 144.
