Dr. Nido Qubein is a excellent example of how successful entrepreneurs succeed no matter what level of sustained adversity and challenges they face in their journey to build their businesses. Nido Qubein is a self made multi-millionaire entrepreneur and highly sought after public speaker, best-selling author, and now President of High Point University. This two part article is based on a personal interview with Dr. Nido Qubein, and research into his proven leadership and entrepreneurial successes starting with nothing by $50 and not able to speak English as a new immigrant.

This is a short two part biography of one of the principal participants who generously contributed their time and insight for this important leadership and entrepreneurship research into the phenomenon of how prominent successful entrepreneurs and leaders by overcome adversity and obstacles. Dr. Nido Qubein’s story starts off with him as just a poor immigrant with limited knowledge of English, no money, no education, and no contacts who then rose in spite of adversities and obstacles to the pinnacle of success in life and business:

Accomplished self-made multi-millionaire entrepreneur, Dr. Nido Qubein is chairman of an international consulting firm and recipient of the highest awards given for professional speakers including the Cavett (known as the “Oscar of professional speaking”), the Speakers Hall of Fame, Horatio Alger Award for Distinguished Americans and The Order of the Long Leaf Pine (North Carolina’s highest civilian honor) and Sales and Marketing International's Ambassador of Free Enterprise. Toastmasters International named him the Top Business and Commerce Speaker and awarded him the Golden Gavel Medal.

Nido served as president of the National Speakers Association which has a membership of 4,000 professionals and is the founder of the National Speakers Association Foundation where the highest award for Philanthropy is named for him. Nido Qubein has been the recipient of many honors including the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, a Doctorate of Laws degree, and induction into Beta Gamma Sigma, the honor society for business leadership.

Nido Qubein has written numerous books and recorded scores of audio and video learning programs including a bestseller on effective communication published by Nightingale-Conant and Berkley. He is an active speaker and consultant addressing more than 100 business and professional groups around the world each year. He doesn't just talk business, he lives it. He is an entrepreneur with active interests in real estate, advertising, and banking.

Money magazine claims, "Qubein puts on a memorable program, gliding from one anecdote to another. Nearly 70 percent of his business comes from companies that have utilized him before. His client list is a 'who's who' of blue chip corporations." Bizlife magazine says, "He coupled his charismatic style and positive nature with his acquired knowledge of human relations and communication...and built a multi-million dollar, multifaceted consulting enterprise -- proving the American dream is still alive and well."

During our interview, Nido Qubein, shared his struggles to learn the English language and get his education. We discussed his life experience and his attitude that he used to successfully overcome adversity and obstacles in his life. He always viewed adversity as simply a challenge not really an impediment. When I asked Nido if he agreed with many of my Doctoral dissertation leadership and entrepreneurship research participants who expressed that they “looked at adversity as just a challenge.” He said that he disagreed with that thought, because he thought that was too limited. He shared his philosophy of life and success that “You turn adversity into abundance.”
