Written by Dr Easton Patrick
Canker sores are tiny, flat, and oval-shaped lesions that typically appear on the soft tissues of the mouth and at the bottom of the gum. These sores, also known as aphthous ulcers or mouth ulcers, are not infectious in nature, but are generally very painful and can lead to difficulty eating and swallowing. Although the exact cause for the development of canker sores is still unknown, it is believed that these sores can be triggered by a variety of factors, including Helicobacter pylori bacteria, mouth injuries, emotional stress, hereditary, eating sticky foods, allergic reactions to food, allergic reaction to certain mouth bacteria, weak immune system, hormone changes during menstruation, mouth cleansing items that contain sodium lauryl sulfate, and the deficiency of iron, folic acid, vitami
B12 or zinc.
Certain underlying medical conditions, such as HIV, inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, and Behcet's disease can also contribute to the outbreak of canker sores in the mouth. The occurrence of canker sores may be preceded by a burning sensation in the mouth. These sores will subside on its own without any treatment. However, there are certain home remedies that you can use to reduce the pain. One effective method to deal with the pain caused by canker sores is to place a black tea bag on the sore and leave it there for some minutes. Make a mixture of one teaspoon of baking soda, 2 ozs of hydrogen peroxide, and salt. Wash your mouth many times a day with this mouth wash. It will help you get rid of pain as well as sores.
A best way to get relief from the pain is to apply an ice cube to the sore for a few minutes. Zinc lozenges are also very good home remedies for cracker sores and are helpful to accelerate the healing process. Eat a lot of yogurt that contains good bacteria is considered as a successful remedy for this condition. Active canker sores can be treated with applying clove oil 3 to 4 times a day. Rinsing the sore with salt water thrice a day is a fine home remedy for mouth ulcers. Take a lemon and slice it into pieces. Put some salt on a slice and apply it directly to the sore for a minute. Do this twice a day until the canker sore goes away.
Another home remedy for canker sores is grapefruit seed extracts. Mix five or six drops of the extract with water and wash the mouth once daily with this solution. To prevent the formation of this problem, place a tablet of activated charcoal on the spot where you feel the burning sensation and keep it there till the sensation subsides. The area will become black, but there is no need to worry about it. If you think you are prone to canker sores, start to take supplements of zinc, vitami
