Diabetes Mellitus or simply diabetes is a disease in which sugar levels in the blood increase, resulting in several metabolic disorders. Diabetes is a very common disease and is estimated that more than 8 percent of the total population of America are diabetic. It is a chronic disease and once detected it can be controlled and not cured permanently.

Human body needs specific levels of blood sugar or glucose, which is regulated and maintained by harmones called insulin and glucagon. The insulin breaks or converts the blood sugar into energy that is required for normal metabolic activities. Improper production or release of insulin causes blood sugar to rise, which in turn can result in a number of complications.

Diabtes is classified into three types – Type 1, Type 2, and Gestational. In Type 1 diabetes the insulin production is smaller than what is required. Type 1 diabetes can be controlled by injecting an appropriate amount of insulin in the body to keep a check on the rising blood sugar. In Type 2 diabetes, it is the cells that do not respond properly to the insulin levels and therefore result in complications. The condition is also called as Insulin Resistance. Type 2 diabetes is more prevalent in patients that Type 1, and the disease has a high mortality rate. Gestational diabetes occurs in women during pregnancy, who may be diabetic. There is a considerable rise of blood sugar during pregnancy in such cases. However, gestational diabetes is not chronic.

There is no permanent cure for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, and the best that can be done is to control the disease. Type 1 diabetes is usually inherited but triggered by certain infections. The causes of Type 2 diabetes are mostly related to genetics or lifestyle of the people, like eating habits and physical exertion.

In diabetic patients there is a greater risk of blood vessels damage and that is why such patients are vulnerable to heart strokes and other heart related problems. As per some reports, diabetes doubles the risk factor for having heart strokes. Besides that diabetes can also affect the eyesight as smaller blood vessels to retina can rupture. Diabetics also run a greater risk of developing kidney related problems.

Type 1 Diabetes Occurrence And Detection

Type 1 diabetes is usually detected at an early age, and constitutes about 10 percent of the total patients suffering diabetes. In most cases there is an early imbalance of insulin production, which is usually due to inheritance. The patients have to take insulin externally to regulated the blood sugar levels. Type 1 diabetes can also occur among older people due to damages caused to pancreas or more specifically the particular pancreatic cells that are responsible to produce insulin in significant amount in the body.

Type 2 Diabetes Occurrence And Detection

Type 2 diabetes is the most prevalent and occurs in about 90 percent of all diabetics. The disease is usually detected in adults and older people. In Type 2 diabetes, patients secrete enough insulin but the body cells do not respond to it. This further results in more insulin secretion in the body to meet the requirements. However, patients start developing insulin resistance and have to rely on medications.

Diabetic have to be very careful about all the remedial measures, medications and self observations advised to them. Things that diabetics need to be careful about are:

Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels.
Stay away from contamination that can cause infections.
Take proper care of cuts, bruises or wounds, especially if they happen to be on feet.
Seek medical attention in case fever above 101 F persists.
Call a doctor if you experience severe chest or abdominal pain, doziness or vomiting.
