You might ask yourself “why am I so depressed?”, “is depression genetic?”, “is depression a chemical imbalance?”, “what’s the cure for depression?”

When people feel depressed, they feel low energy, unmotivated, stuck, hurt, sad, and discouraged.

Definition: Depression is basically when your life doesn’t match how you think it should be, and you feel powerless to change it.

Dr. Martin Seligman, a leader in cognitive psychology and motivational research, wrote a National Bestselling Book called Learned Optimism, in which he explains that depression is a mentality that is easy to change.

There are both self-defeating thought patterns as well as self-empowering thought patterns. We now have a choice.

People feel depressed when: they think problems are permanent (forever), pervasive (they can’t change it) and personal (it means there’s something wrong about them).

Example 1: I want to have a loving relationship, but I have trouble finding the right partners and I don’t think I can ever find them.

Example 2: I want a job and the money I like, but I feel stuck in this job forever.

Example 3: My parents should accept me as I am, but they don’t, and I can’t do anything to change it.

Change Your Physical Reality

To change our physical reality, we sometimes feel like we don’t have options, to change our job, to change our body, to change the kind of people we attract into our lives, and so forth.

The Truth Is: I’ve found that when people really really want to succeed, accomplish and reach their goals, they almost always find ways.

Think about your own life, when you really really wanted to, or felt like you needed to reach your goal, you almost always found ways, right?

If you really wanted the job of your dreams, you searched on the internet everyday, you asked your friends, you asked strangers, you looked for job postings.

In the end, you usually reached your goal, right?

Bottom Line

Sometimes it takes many, many tries to get what we want, but what I’ve found is that the people who keep trying, almost always reach their goal. They do it through empowering beliefs, hard work, the right strategies, patience, faith, and working together with people.

Why should I keep trying if it seems like I keep missing the mark? Colonel Sanders, the finger licking good KFC owner, got his chicken turned down 1009 times! He eventually succeeded and ran a success chain of KFC restaurants which are still running strong to this day.

Change Your Perspective

Based on my experience, the number one reason people feel depressed is because they think they’re not acceptable as they are. In other words, they only feel good about themselves (basically they only have high self-esteem) if they act a certain way or accomplish certain goals.

This usually happens when well meaning important people in someone’s life only praises them when they succeed or act in a certain way. For example, parents who feel very proud when their children get good grades and who act very mad when their children get bad grades.

The child usually develops a belief that they need to succeed in order to feel accepted, loved and significant.

This is a distorted perspective as it’s not fully true. When I show people different angles and new perspectives, they feel alive, fully energized and don’t feel depressed anymore.
