You are blessed beyond measure if you are one of the few individuals who are not plagued with procrastination issues. Before you know what has happened this time thief will sneak in and take precious minutes or even hours. All the searching in the world will not bring them back, they are gone forever.
Have you found yourself putting off tasks until tomorrow, even with good reason, but then cannot fathom why you did that? It may be procrastination in disguise! Sometimes it is cloaked in rationalization. You do not have the parts you need or the weather was just too hot are all common reasoning. Unfortunately, you can always find a good "reason" to delay your projects.
Did you know procrastination can be habit forming? If you keep putting off dealing with it you can rest, assured procrastination will be a constant companion. Other things are more important is another popular reason to delay a task. Sometimes, actually many times, these excuses are used just so you can watch television, play games online or check your email!
The first step is recognizing the difference between a good reason to delay your project and an excuse to avoid something. Does the job really need to be completed? If so, get on it and complete it quickly, now reward yourself for the first victory over procrastination. Once you have completed the job you must assess what you have done. Was it worth the effort and your time? You might find you had been procrastinating was for a good reason, but that is not often the case.
If you are having trouble finding your direction, you may procrastinate as well. The father of procrastination has to be disorganization. Make yourself a list, at the top will be the most urgent tasks. Convince yourself that nothing else matters until you have completed at least one task. These may seem like small steps, but great strides are made with these tiny improvements.
Projects that are very big can be daunting and lead to procrastination, things like building a home or writing a book fall into this category. The light at the end is blocked by the huge elephant standing in front of you. You are going to need to take the elephant one small piece at a time until it is gone. Do not try to "eat" it all in one setting; instead take on smaller manageable tasks. Even tiny successes are another step forward.
You may be afraid to make a decision, but forge ahead anyway. Even if you are wrong, at least you have accomplished a task. Business and personal lives can be affected by this type of indecision. You may want to write down the possible decisions, along with their pros and cons, then move forward. Direction is the missing element and once you have it the fog lifts and you can find the path again.
Failure is the final common cause of procrastination. If you never get started, you never have to worry about failing! Stop procrastinating; these dreaded and difficult tasks are usually not nearly as bad as you might think. Do not put things off until tomorrow anymore!
