History Of Leotards:

Leotards were used mainly by dancers, gymnasts, and for workout purposes. A leotard is a one-piece garment that is close-fitting and covers the upper body, leaving the legs free for smooth movements, yet defining the body structure. Originally, they were designed exclusively for men. Later, girls leotards (with slight structural differences) became popular, and women started using them as well. The design of a leotard (originally called a maillot) was done by Jules Léotard, an acrobat from 19th century France. His primary purpose was to make his act more dramatic without restricting his moves. Initially, in the 1950s, stage artists and performers used to wear leotards.

Leotards entered the fitness world in the 1970s. At this point, they were often brightly- colored and mainly made of polyester. Later in the 80s, spandex and Lycra were also used as materials to make leotards. Today, you can find leotards made from various materials starting from spandex to cotton and velvet. Nowadays, leotards are used as fashionwear, sportswear, dancewear, and as girls' gymnastic clothing. Some of the most well-known brands of dance leotards are “Capezio,” “Bloch,” Ballet Rosa,” “Roch Valley,” “Mirella,” and “Lulli Dancewear.”

Reasons Behind Their Popularity:

There are few significant reasons behind such a blooming popularity of leotards or bodysuits (similar to leotards). Many athletes and dancers believe leotards are very comfortable due to their defined structure and stretchable material that does not restrict movements at all. The elasticity of the material has increased as well, thus making them more striking to customers. In older days, leotards usually were restricted to a few solid colors, and in national events, athletes wore leotards that contained colors of their respective national flags. But nowadays, even they opt for other colors. Leotards are available in various colors and patterns, and fabrics also. Bodysuits are the more fashionable version of leotards. They give a seamless and defined structure along with comfort. The only difference between a bodysuit and a leotard is that, unlike a leotard, a bodysuit is worn with a pair of jeans, trousers, or skirts.

Nowadays, there are various versions as well. Leotards that are attached to short sets are usually called unitards or biketards. People also wear long sleeve leotards. One of the main reasons that leotards have become popular is that they are a versatile clothing option. They can be dressed up or dressed down as required. Although leotards are so popular, people often prefer shorts, crop top and short sets, tee shirts, and leggings, especially for working out, dancing and yoga. Shorts and sports bras had replaced leotards almost completely by the 1990s.

The Current Stance Of Leotards:

Leotards, as mentioned above, are very fashionable today. Many celebrities, from Celine Dion to Taylor Swift and Beyoncé have flaunted leotards on various occasions and events. Leotards have become a fashion trend now, along with other clothing items like crop tops, dresses, tee shirts, etc.

Conclusion:

Various clothing items were once very popular and then had gone totally out of fashion. Like a full circle, these have come back in fashion as well. Such clothing items include corduroys, bike shorts, flare pants, and a lot more. Dance leotards also can be included on the list. They might not be as popular as gym wear or dancewear today, but they are seen as fashionable items worn on streets and various occasions. Fashion has always been like that. Trends keep repeating themselves. Dance leotards can be very comfortable for some, but they are very fashionable in most cases. Hence, they are still loved in the fashion world.
