I was talking with Jill a few weeks ago and she was saying that the crystals she had to help her sleep weren’t working. With a little further conversation and enquiry I soon deduced why. If you, like Jill, are having trouble sleeping, waking tied and far from refreshed, it may well be worth reviewing some of these important conditions to a good nights sleep.

Insomnia and bad dreams can be a curse and a real drain on our vitality, robbing us of our enjoyment of life and making it a bit of a drag. Let’s check out some of the basics.

•Have you allowed sufficient time for a good nights sleep? Jill was only allocating about five hours, which is long way short of the eight most of us need.
•Almost the same question, but are you going to bed early enough?
•Have you allowed for some quiet time before retiring? Jill was often retiring after several hours of murder and mayhem on the tele.
•Is your room dark enough? Jill had a very bright street light that shone through her window. She now has a block out curtain. Sleeping in a dark room is essential to our circadian rhythms and has an important role in our natural serotonin and melatonin production.
•Do you have too many electrical devices keeping you company? EMF’s and EMR’s are not conducive to a good nights sleep. You guessed it; Jill had the works – TV, DVD, radio, alarm clock, computer, and her mobile kept on her bedside table, just in case someone really needed to communicate with her! Not advisable when you’re trying to sleep! And an electric blanket, kept on in the winter. By all means warm the bed before you get in, but before you start your slumber – turn it off.
•Apart from an alarm clock which is essential for some, two other electrical devices may be allowed. 1. A device to play soft, gentle, soothing music for up to an hour after you get into bed. This engages your mind and helps to lull you into heavenly sleep. 2. A Himalayan Crystal Salt Lamp with a timer set to go off an hour after retiring and relighting upon arising. The negative ions released into the room from the lamp add to a desirable environment and provides the comfort of soft lighting. Jill has now seen to these components.
•Do you have an electrical meter box adjacent to your bedroom? If so, relocating your room is the best option if you’re able to. Or, buy a modulating or neutralizing device, or minimise disruption by placing several suitable crystals like Lepidolite, Black Tourmaline, Sodalite and Smokey Quartz in or around the box.
•One person I know overcame this problem by placing a shelf on the wall and making a display of crystals to deflect the unwanted radiations. Another client had a large picture frame constructed with a thin backing of lead. This is hung with a favourite piece of art between him and the offending meter box.
•Which direction do you sleep in? If you have a room that will allow it, experiment with the direction of your bed. Jill found that sleeping north-south with her head in the north gave her the most satisfactory sleep.
•Is your bedroom clean and tidy? Jill admitted she really could improve in this area. It sounds boring, but I really mean it; there shouldn’t be any clutter, it is one of the best places to harbour stagnant energy, which you don’t want anywhere in your house, especially not in your bedroom.
•Do you have too many crystals in the bedroom? Jill did. Just about her entire collection were in with her and keeping her company; their combined energies and personalities were partying every night – it’s just like having your room full of friends. This is alright if you’re having a pyjama party but otherwise there is just too much going on. Only keep those crystals in your room that have a role to play.
•Do you have the proper bed? This is beyond the scope of this article and is probably the material of another discussion, as is the matter of your partner’s nocturnal habits, which can unfortunately play havoc on a good night’s sleep, but they do have a large role to play and really should be taken into account.

•Jill said she loved fragrances wafting in her room and that she liked using incense and her oil burner/vaporizer. This is a great idea if you’re into it. Lavender is very soothing and calming and can help lull you off sleep, or Rose to help you relax after a busy day.
With the basics properly addressed Jill found she was most of the way there, and the crystals she had been using were now able to work their magic and guide her into sweet dreams and a restful night’s sleep. Jill had been using:
•Black Tourmaline – placed in each corner to ground the room to counteract negative energies. It acts as a sort of grounding circuit to the Earth’s shifting energetic field, helping attune your energies to a more peaceful frequency.
•Smokey Quartz – kept under the bed, this is another grounding stone that transmutes negative energies which are often caused by thoughts and worries, and can be a major cause of restlessness and nightmares. By helping to alleviate the feelings of stress and negativity you feel more relaxed and let go of the subconscious fears that are causing the nightmares in the first place.
•Amethyst – kept under the pillow or by the bed, is a meditative and calming stone that has a gently sedative energy that enhances the feelings of happiness, peacefulness, leading to a gentle night’s sleep.
•Rose Quartz – under the pillow or by the bed, is a very soothing and happy stone that increases the positive vibrational qualities that are present in all of us. The love energy it expresses reduces stress levels that can block peaceful rest at night.
•Mangano Calcite also under the pillow, this stone helps you accept unconditional love and promotes sound sleep and prevents nightmares.
Some crystals have more appeal to us than others; you may prefer to use some of the following stones:
Sugilite – placed on your forehead or under your pillow to increase your dreams.
Garnet – under your pillow will help you to remember your dreams.
Sodalite – well known for its powerful calming & soothing qualities.
Chrysoprase – at the head of the bed if you are over stressed.
These stones are also very helpful in overcoming insomnia – Ajoite, Candle Quartz, Celestite, Charoite, Hematite, Howlite, Lapis Lazuli, Lepidolite, Magnetite, Moonstone, Muscovite, Topaz and Zoisite.
Needless to say now that Jill has cleaned up her room, attended to the other essential basics and minimised the number of crystals in her room to just those that provide that perfect night’s sleep, she is sleeping peacefully and waking fully rejuvenated and ready for all her day may bring.
