Since the introduction of hormonal contraceptive methods, women have found it easier to control their sex lives, especially where contraceptive accidents are considered. Oral contraceptive pills, one of the hormonal contraceptive methods, have become the most popular and effective method for preventing unplanned pregnancy for women. Other hormonal contraceptive methods are contraceptive rings and patches, which have been found to be gaining popularity at a gradual pace as well. The oral contraceptive pills have been divided into two categories of combination pills and mini pills based on the artificial female hormones present in the pill. Dianette – A combination pill Dianette is one of the most popular and widely used combination pills, and has been proven to be almost 100% effective in preventing women from getting pregnant. Being a combination pill, it consists of two artificial female hormones of ethinylestradiol (oestrogen) and cyproterone acetate (progestogen) as its active ingredients. It works in three ways for preventing pregnancy in women. It prevents eggs from being produced, prevents sperm from entering the womb by thickening the cervical mucus and lastly by altering the womb lining so that even if an egg is produced and fertilized, it cannot attach itself and grow further. Yasmin – A combination pill Yasmin is the most popular combination pill used by women as a means of contraception for preventing pregnancy. It has been proven to be almost 100% effective in protecting women against pregnancy. It consists of ethinylestradiol (artificial oestrogen) and drospirenone (artificial progesterone) as its active ingredients. Most women prefer using Yasmin as it does not carry the risk of weight gain as a side effect for women. On taking this pill, you can also experience an improvement in the appearance of your skin and a reduction in excessive hair growth. This pill can be used be women who are 18 years old or above, but should be avoided in pregnancy, or if breastfeeding is taking place. Marvelon – A combination pill Marvelon is also a popular combination pill, which has been proven to be almost 100% effective in preventing women from getting pregnant. It consists of ethinylestradiol (artificial oestrogen, 30 micrograms) and desogestrel (artificial progesterone, 0.15 milligrams) as its active ingredients. You can buy this pill through a doctor’s prescription or through any of the registered online clinics. This pill also helps you by making your periods less uncomfortable and also in making them regular. You are required to take this pill for up to 21 days of your 28 day menstrual cycle. Women who are 18 years old or above can take this pill to protect themselves against pregnancy. Microgynon – A combination pill Microgynon is another popular combination pill which has been proven to be almost 100% effective in protecting women from getting pregnant. It is a low dosage pill, which consists of ethinylestradiol (artificial oestrogen, 30 micrograms) and levonorgestrel (artificial progesterone, 1.5 milligrams) as its active ingredients. This pill can be taken by women who are 18 years old or above, but should be avoided by those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. This pill is required to be taken for 21 days of your menstrual cycle with a break of 7 days in between, during which you are likely to have your periods.
