Often, greeting cards are sent without the proper envelope. People are in such a rush, there’s no time to select a proper card envelope to complete the sentiment of what the card is for. Gift card envelopes are important to the overall theme of the card; it’s the same as giving a gift. When someone buys a gift, they want corresponding wrapping paper to make their gift look beautiful, besides hiding the contents. The same goes for a card envelope. The gift card envelope is just as important as wrapping paper. This is why most cards include a matching envelope. For example, a Christmas card may have a green, red, white or gold envelope. It may seem awkward to buy a Christmas card with a purple, pink or light blue envelope which would be more appropriate for a baby shower for example.
The card envelope is what people notice first. This will set the tenor before the card is even opened. In fact, the card envelope will make or break whatever the sender’s intentions are for sending it in the first place. Whether it is a birthday card, mother’s day card, or a simple thank-you card, sending a card in the right envelope shows that the sender took the time to be thoughtful, it highlights the consideration and caring character of the person or company that sent it.
Card envelopes are usually renewed from text weight papers. The weight of the envelope is significant for a number of reasons. Thickness symbolizes a good quality and sturdiness. However, it can also add weight to your mailing which will increase the postage. If a company is sending out cards for an event for example, they may want to use a lighter weight envelope, or they may have a special rate for bulk mail already in place. This may also depend on the type of company as well. An expensive store like Tiffany’s will more than likely send a unique and high quality card envelope. Textures, colours and prints can make all the difference to high-end merchants when sending greetings or gifts to their customers. We certainly wouldn’t expect Cartier to send information to their rich customers in a lightweight, plain white envelope. The envelope is the “greeter at the door,” and this is how the receiver will make their first impression.
Most card envelopes or backboard envelopes come in one dreadful colour, brown or manila, even though today it’s possible to find various colours besides brown or white. There are some retailers who carry envelopes that are shiny metallic, or any colour you can think of. The not so fashionable backboard envelope has its advantages. Its sturdy, that’s why it’s been a staple for so long, and its completely recyclable. There are many retailers who carry backboard envelopes already made from recycled paper. They are more environmentally friendly than their more dressed-up counterparts. Usually the receiver can reuse the envelope by erasing or peeling away the address, and then its good to go for another day.
So it pays to give that card envelope a bit of thought before sending out correspondence. This is true if someone is searching for employment as well. Even though we have the Internet, and potential employers may prefer that method, sometimes it pays to be a bit unique and send the potential employer a card in a modest card envelope as a means of introduction. So, the next time a person decides to send a card, they should take the time to make sure they have the perfect card envelope in the right size and colour to make a good impression.
