If you weigh less in the morning and high in the evening then it maybe a symptom of water retention. It causes swelling of legs, hands, face and stomach. Water or fluid retention or edema or it is simply described as an accumulation of water in the body organs which leads to the organ swelling. It happens when our body is unable to balance the mineral level. In such situation water starts accumulating in the tissues which in turn causes organ swelling. Some common symptoms of water retention are pain and swelling in legs and heels, water accumulation in stomach, face, hands, arms and lungs, sudden increase or decrease in weight, fever, fatigue and hypothyroidism. Some of the major reasons for water retention involves high salt intake, high sugar intake, hormonal imbalance, anaemia, allergies and sometimes heart challenges, kidney disorders, liver ailment and lymph gland ailments.

Ayurveda Treatment

Follow some simple dos and don’ts to treat water retention.

a) Drink plenty of water and minimize the intake of salt, sugar and baking soda to reduce the swelling.

b) Do exercise for at least 30 minutes every day as this will detoxify the body and improve the blood circulation.

c) Include apple, grapes, strawberry, green leafy vegetables, asparagus and beetroot in your diet which corrects water retention.

d) Avoid alcohol, smoking, coffee, fast food and carbonated drinks.

e) In addition to these some ayurvedic treatment gives an excellent results in water retention. Ayurveda is an ancient, indigenous medicinal system of healing which is around 4,500 year old. This involves treatments with diet, herbs and natural remedies.

1. Dandelion not only cures water retention but also nourishes and strengthens the kidneys and liver. It also improves digestion process. Dandelion is a natural diuretic which reduces the swelling. Dandelion contains vitamin A, B, C and D along with some minerals such as iron, potassium, magnesium and calcium. Boil a cup of water and add 1 ½ teaspoon of fresh dandelion leaves. Strain it after 5-7 minutes. Drink 1-2 cup of dandelion tea every day.

2. Parsley is a natural diuretic. It has a high content of calcium, vitamin B complex, iron and antioxidants. It prevents the re-absorption of sodium and potassium which in turn increases the urine output and hence flushes out more fluid. Parsley is also used to treat lower urinary tract infection, kidney ailment and water retention. Add fresh parsley leaves to boiled water. Strain it after 15 minutes and drink it.

3. Aloe vera pulp and juice are widely used as ayurvedic remedy to cure water retention. Aloe vera is very useful in treating water retention. Being a natural diuretic it helps the body in removing the excess fluid and thus relieves the body pain related to swelling. Aloe vera also acts as a detoxifying agent and hence helps in cleansing the body by flushing out the accumulated toxins.

4. Rosemary treats body bloating very effectively. It has anti inflammatory, analgesic and mild diuretic properties. It helps to get rid of water retention and body bloating. It improves the kidney functions and hence increases the urine flow which helps the body to flush out extra water or fluid. When applied topically, it improves blood circulation.

5. Horse chestnut is an effective herb which reduces water retention. Horse chestnut seed extract is commonly used to treat leg swelling, water retention and itching. Horse chestnut helps with connective tissue barrier between tissue and blood vessels. It also improves blood circulation through blood vessels and prevents the fluid to leak out of blood vessels. It flushes out the excess fluid through urine to prevent water retention. Horse chestnut also has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties which decreases pain, swelling and inflammation associated with water retention.

6. Coriander seeds has a diuretic property and hence helps in preventing water retention. Along with calcium, iron, folic acid, traces of zinc, vitamin A, C and K, coriander is also a great source of potassium which has an added advantage to treat water retention. Add 2 tbsp of coriander seeds to water. Boil and reduce the quantity to half. Strain the mixture and drink this coriander seed water twice a day.
