In a recent Body & Soul magazine article a reader poll indicated that the everyday workplace employs many unhappy people. But you don’t have to be one of them if you are spiritually awakened.

Before I show you the most popular answer to this question, let me assure you that whatever your answer is, you can make any change necessary to be happier in your work. I’ll show you how.

First, “The difference between a dream and a goal is a time line.” So says Dr. Phil as he interviews a guest about changing his work goals. So, let’s set some goals for the changes that will bring you happiness at work. We’ll start with an easy business plan.

What are most workers unhappy with on the job? 40% of Body & Soul readers indicated that if they could change anything about their job it would be to be paid more and appreciated more. If this sounds like you, here’s the plan:

Ask yourself these questions about being paid more:
• What can I do to improve my position within the company so I can earn more money?
• Ask your supervisor what additional skills learned would bring you a raise.
• Determine if you are currently underpaid by researching the industry standards for your part of the country. Go to the Salary Wizard on salary.com and type in your job title and zip code.

As far as appreciation on the job is concerned, ask yourself these questions, remembering that how one person appreciates and how another feels appreciated can be two different things. Which best describes the way you would like to be appreciated at work?
• Peer recognition
• Management recognition
• Receiving a company award along with the recognition
• With a pay raise
• With a promotion
• In writing
• Verbally
• In private
• In front of others

As you can see, appreciation means different things to different people. By knowing the best method of being appreciated for you and reviewing these options with your supervisor, you can’t help but find these changes bringing you the great joy and happiness you’ve been looking for in your work.

Spiritually awakened means you know what is best for you and are willing to go out and get it.
