This chapter follows on from the previous ones on our thoughts and attitudes, affirmations and self image. As we have seen, our minds control absolutely everything about us - our total 'persona' (impressive word that!). It has an effect on everything that I have written about already: our potential for success, goal-setting, self image, our thoughts, attitude, etc.

The mind is like a parachute - it only works when it's opened.


Like the author of 'Mindpower' (on which this chapter is based), John Kehoe, I too withdrew "from civilisation" into enforced seclusion for three or four years. His excellent book, as well as many others, led me to intensive study and contemplation of the inner workings of the human mind.
Kehoe, a very successful public speaker, studied the mind, as well as ways of harnessing it's immense forces to create new realities for every one of us.

Like a magnifying glass, strong and concentrated thoughts are strong and concentrated forces. You can develop them and they become more and more powerful. What determines the course of your individual life? It is your deeply held beliefs, your passions, your values, your fears, your hopes, worries, attitudes and desires. In short, every thought you ever think (or thought in the past) has (or has had) some effect on yourself and on other people. They usually determine why you are in the place (situation) you are currently in.

Just wanting something badly enough, will not in itself make it happen for you; DESIRE on its own is not everything. We also need WILL... to make it happen. I believe we all need to TAKE CONSTRUCTIVE ACTION and perhaps change our attitudes about our goals, our targets. You will always remain where you are unless you change your thinking.

Time for a few quotations (I like my quotes)...

"Do what you've always done and you'll get what (where) you always got".

"To them that hath...more shall be given. To them that hath not, even what little they have will be taken away"

Is that why luck always seem to favour the wealthy? Or does their positive attitude attract good fortune? Fortune favours the brave.

BELIEVE, truly believe you WILL be successful. I think any successful person has a SUCCESS CONSCIOUSNESS or a PROSPERITY CONSCIOUSNESS. Those people have the "knack" of seeing things differently to the majority of us. In short, they view optimistically every situation they may find themselves in, no matter how distressing it may be, and they see it as an opportunity for growth or learning. Remember it is not your situation and circumstances that keep you stuck "down in the depths of despair", but your thoughts. You have chosen your consciousness, your REALITY. So it's up to YOU to change your perception of a certain event, ie. the meaning you give to a negative. Successful people have a positive outlook and see some good in any situation, no matter how bad it appears at first.

It's very hard to think positive thoughts when you are in the depths of despair, in the bottom of a deep dark pit with no light at the end of the tunnel, just sheer blackness. It's perfectly natural to feel hopeless at times, even for a "born optomist"!.
What can you do to get out of a bad situation, to improve your quality of life?

Firstly, ask yourself what do you want out of life? For most of us the answers are: health, power, recognition of success, prosperity (= financial security) and happiness. At least that's what people say they want. Once you have defined them, then take the decision to put in the effort and you will attain it; everything else will fall into place. Simple! The mind is an amazing tool with a power all of its own. We don't realize it's capacity, until we start stretching ourselves by utilizing our imagination (like a rubber-band and then we are still only using a fraction of it's potential capacity). It is like a sponge, the way it can absorb negative "vibes" (attitudes).
However and more importantly, your mind is like a garden which can be cultivated or neglected. As the gardener, you will reap the harvest of your work or neglect your mind by not using it properly *.

From our thoughts spring our reality; consequently our thoughts determine the outcomes of our lives. Thus, our beliefs create our behaviors... and our behaviors create our experience.

From the ideas we hold in the "top two inches" of our heads our future emerges. So
