Special Report
Secrets women keep…
(From their Doctors because their afraid of being called a Hypochondriac!!)
I hear the same story every day from women. They’re afraid to tell their doctors everything they’re feeling because they’re afraid of being called a hypochondriac. They just know their doctor will look at them like they are crazy!!
Stories about office visits concluding with “there is no medical reason you should feel this way” are a daily occurrence. All your tests came back normal, but you still feel like crap. You don’t want to go on anti-depressants or birth control so you keep your mouth shut and trudge through life the best you can.
Of course, like any real problem it doesn’t go away until you address it. Diet and exercise only takes you so far in your journey to wellness. When you hit the wall and are about to resort to diet pills or drugs, you need to look at your hormone system. I call it the hormone intersection. Every person I work with finally reaches this crossroad. Women seem to hit this intersection earlier than men. That’s because today’s society has been screwing up women’s hormones for years!!!
Nutrition and fitness take you to the crossroad of the hormone intersection. Then you come to a screeching stop. You can’t lose any more weight. You can’t work out any harder. You’re eating what you think you should. You’re at the crossroads. What are you going to do? Do you say, “Well, this is as good as it gets.” Or do you search for new ways to navigate your journey?
This report gives you the information you need to make an informed decision on how to cross the hormone intersection. One of the main hormone systems in your body is the steroid hormone system. This system is controlled by your brain and needs cholesterol to work properly. Your steroid hormones are your stress and sex hormones. So understanding these hormones takes you a long way into understanding why you aren’t nuts. Let’s first discuss each hormone and describe its normal effect on the body. Then discuss the effects each hormone has when there is too much or too little. But let’s start by explaining how to check your hormones in the first place.
It’s not easy to check your hormone levels. But there are ways to do it. The first way is through blood testing. Blood testing for hormones is the gold standard in the US medical community. Testing hormone levels this way is a problem because female hormone levels change daily especially in women who have a menstrual cycle. So how can you understand how their hormones are changing unless you have multiple blood tests done throughout the entire month? With one sample all you know is your hormone level at that split second your blood was drawn.
The latest way to check hormone levels is saliva. Your saliva has active hormones in it at all times. These hormone levels change throughout the day. So testing your saliva at different times throughout the day gives your doctor a better understanding of your overall hormone picture and all you have to do is spit in a vial.
Hair analysis is done by using stainless steel thinning shears and cutting a small amount of hair from the back of your head. The hair is taken from as close to the scalp as possible. Hair analysis checks the mineral composition of your hair. This tells the Real Life Wellness provider what effect your hormones are having inside the cells of many different organs of the body.
In summary, you can get your hormones checked at three different levels. First, blood tests look at your hormones at the protein bound level. In other words, this test will tell you the total amount of hormone you have available. Second, saliva testing tells you how much active hormone you have at that instant. Saliva tests the one or two percent of the total amount of hormone currently active in your system. The final level is the hair analysis. Hair analysis assesses the effect your active hormones have on your cells.
Once you get your blood, saliva and hair analysis done, what should you do with the results? Go on medication? Take vitamins? Have you finally discovered the reason you feel like crap? Does this mean you’re not crazy?
All these questions will be answered by your test results. Your situation is unique and all of these tests might be necessary to discover your specific situation. Real Life Wellness is designed to create a personalized program based on you.
Now that you have a better idea of how to test your hormones, let’s discuss how hormones work in your body.
Major Steroid Hormones
Let’s classify steroid hormones into two groups: major hormones and minor hormones. Major hormones are ones you can’t live without. If you don’t have these major hormones you will soon be dead. There are three major hormones. First is adrenaline. This hormone controls your heart rate, blood pressure, and makes sugar available for energy. The second major hormone is insulin. Insulin carries sugar in your blood stream to different organs and tissues for use. The last major hormone is cortisol. The primary function of cortisol is to convert fat and protein into sugar.
Epinephrine (also called Adrenaline) is an excitatory neurotransmitter and a hormone. As a hormone it’s secreted under stress to produce the fight or flight response. When epinephrine is released in high levels you experience anxiety, hyper-activity, insomnia and inability to handle stress.
When you have low levels of epinephrine you suffer fatigue, poor concentration, decreased immune response, weight gain, and ineffective adrenal glands. Many people have low levels of epinephrine after fighting a major stressor for a long period of time. This is why many people get sick after a long period of stress. This is also a common cause of Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
The second major hormone is insulin. Insulin is produced by your pancreas and carries sugar throughout your bloodstream to your organs and tissues. Having too much insulin for a long time leads to insulin resistant. Some experts say 25% of Americans suffer from insulin resistance. When high levels of insulin are present for a long time your cell receptors get burned out. Fat cells, on the other hand, love all that extra sugar carried by the insulin. All that extra sugar gets deposited into your fat cells.
Diabetes occurs when your body quits producing enough insulin or can’t use the insulin you produce effectively. If you don’t have enough insulin or you are insulin resistant your blood sugar can’t get absorbed into your organs and tissues. And believe it or not sugar floating around in your blood is a very bad thing. It actually tears up your blood vessels and nerve endings and leads to kidney failure and other life threatening problems.
The last major hormone is cortisol. Cortisol is produced to fight stress. Cortisol breaks down proteins and fats to make sugars so your body can use it for fuel. Cortisol is the only hormone that increases with age. Excess cortisol causes insulin resistance which leads to the increase of your central belly fat.
When you don’t have enough cortisol the amount of energy you have available for bodily functions is decreased dramatically. This happens when you have adrenal gland fatigue. Your insulin level starts to drop and your ability to work is greatly decreased.
Well that all sounds pretty simple doesn’t it? Cortisol makes the sugar from proteins and fats. Insulin carries this sugar to your organs and tissues and then thyroid hormone starts your engine to burn the sugar off. What’s the problem?
This is a very good system. This major hormone system has developed over millions of years. When we lived in caves and hunted for our food, this system was all we needed. Adrenaline kicked in when the saber toothed tiger was around. After you got away you were able to kick back and eat the food you gathered to allow cortisol and insulin to do their job and everything was good. In that era you had high stress situations for short periods followed by long periods with low stress. In today’s world this is certainly not the case.
Minor Steroid Hormones
Minor hormones have become much more important since the time of the caveman. Minor hormones aren’t absolutely necessary for survival but are necessary for the continuation of our species as a whole. Minor steroid hormones of importance are estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA and melatonin. The first three minor hormones are called your sex hormones. These three hormones should be present in every human being both men and women. DHEA is the most abundant steroid hormone in the body. It is a building block for both of your male (testosterone) and your female (estrogen) sex hormones. Melatonin is also found in both men and women.
The first set of minor hormones is your sex hormones. Estrogen, progesterone and testosterone are the big three sex hormones. Each of these hormones has different effects on your body but every human both men and women need proper amounts of these three hormones.
Sex hormones have been the battle ground of women for the last forty years. The introduction of synthetic sex hormones, the pollution of women with xenohoromones (coming from plastics and insecticides) and the addition of hormones into the food supply have created a sea of hormones women are exposed to every day. These factors combined with the extremely stressful lifestyle women over 40 live has created the recipe for why you think you’re going crazy.
Dr. Janet Lang, a chiropractor who has studied functional endocrinology since her graduation from chiropractic school in 1979, states about 60 percent of women find themselves in “estrogen dominance.” She defines estrogen dominance as “a condition which women has a deficient, normal or excessive level of estrogen but have too little progesterone to balance their current estrogen levels.” (From Lang Integrative Health Seminars, LLC, Functional Endocrinology Part II, page 37.)
Common causes of estrogen dominance are stress, menstrual cycle problems, oral or injected contraceptives, conventional hormone replacement therapy, poor diet, nutritional deficiencies, xenohoromones, and obesity.
Common symptoms of estrogen dominance are anxiety, irritability, anger and agitation. Menstrual problems, such as, cramps, heavy bleeding, prolonged bleeding and clots are also common. Breast tenderness, lumpiness and fibrocystic breasts, as well as, headaches, mood swings, memory difficulties, depression, decreased sex drive, and insomnia are also common symptoms.
Common digestive symptoms of estrogen dominance are gall bladder problems, carbohydrate/chocolate cravings and blood sugar problems. Other symptoms include fat gain around the hips, thighs and belly and cold hands and feet because the excessive estrogen blocks thyroid hormones from working correctly.
When I talk about these symptoms to women in my practice I always get the same reaction. Virtually every woman goes down the checklist and says, “No wonder I feel like crap all the time!!!! Why hasn’t anybody given me this information before now?” I tell them calmly about the new research being done on estrogen dominance and how it takes time for mainstream healthcare to use and embrace new information.
Most healthcare providers still check sex hormones using blood tests. They have done it for years. Blood tests are still considered the gold standard in sex hormone testing. The problem with blood testing of sex hormones is you are checking the protein-bound form (inactive form) of the hormone. Blood tests don’t check the active form of the hormone. There is active hormone in the blood, but a routine blood test doesn’t check these levels.
Routine blood work checks the total amount of hormones available, not the amount of hormone active at that time. Virtually every woman has enough total hormones, but the amount of active hormone can be low, high or even non-existent and the blood test will come back within normal limits. That’s why when you have gotten your sex hormones checked your tests were normal.
In other words, blood tests for sex hormones won’t tell you how much active hormone you currently have. Blood tests tells you how much total hormone you have available. You can get active hormone testing from blood, but the tests cost thousands of dollars to perform. Saliva tests, on the other hand, only check the active sex hormone available for use at the time of the sample. These tests give you an accurate picture of how much active sex hormone you have available. These tests give you a real picture of how well your sex hormone system is doing.
Most women over 40 have never been properly tested for estrogen dominance. Your Real Life Wellness program begins with a discussion of your nutrition and fitness needs. Then your stress and sex hormone systems will be examined once you reach the hormone intersection. When these issues need to be addressed, assessments can be performed quickly and easily. The only way to make it through the hormone intersection safely is to have your stress and sex hormones in balance. The two main sex hormones (estrogen and progesterone) in women over 40 must remain in balance to get you where you want to go.
Estrogen is made of three active parts. Estradiol is the most active form of estrogen. It’s responsible for the development of female sex organs, helps keep your bones strong, reduces your risk of heart disease and keeps the nerves in your brain healthy. This is why women are given estradiol after menopause. Estradiol helps maintain your bone density and decreases your risk of heart disease and Alzheimer’s. Synthetic estradiol doesn’t have the same effects as bioidentical or your own natural estradiol does.
The second active form of estrogen is called Estrone. It is much weaker than estradiol in its effect and is produced by the ovaries and to a lesser degree by the adrenal glands. Estrone production increases after menopause in most women but doesn’t have the profound effects estradiol does.
The last active form of estrogen is called estriol. It is the weakest form of estrogen produced. Estriol is produced in large quantities during pregnancy and is a sign of the baby’s well being in the womb. Even though it is the weakest form of estrogen it is the most abundant form of estrogen in most women and it is thought to fight off breast cancer and is important for the lubrication and hydration of the female sex organs.
The second sex hormone is called progesterone. Progesterone is the hormone responsible for preparing your uterus for a fertilized egg in pregnancy. Progesterone is described as the feel good hormone. When women have high levels of progesterone they often have a “glow” about them. But when progesterone levels are low, anxiety and irritability are very common symptoms. Progesterone must be in balance with estrogen for women to have a healthy sex hormone profile. You should have about thirty times as much progesterone as you have estradiol.
The last sex hormone is testosterone. Testosterone is usually thought of as the male sex hormone and is produced mainly in the testes in men. But women should have small amounts of testosterone in their bodies too. Testosterone helps build lean muscle, improves skin tone and increases sex drive. Testosterone is also in balance with estrogen and progesterone. If your estrogen and progesterone levels drop and your testosterone begin to increase, facial hair, and other male characteristics can develop.
The next minor hormone is called DHEA. DHEA is the most abundant steroid hormone in your body. But DHEA levels can decrease with age. DHEA is produced in the adrenal glands and is then converted into your sex hormones (estrogen and testosterone). DHEA is in balance with cortisol. If your cortisol levels increase DHEA levels will decrease. The higher your level of DHEA the lower your risk is for heart disease.
The last minor hormone is Melatonin. Melatonin controls your day and night cycle. High levels of melatonin are normally found at night and you should have low levels of melatonin during the day. Decreased melatonin at night makes it difficult to go to sleep and diminishes the rest you get while you are asleep. Melatonin is made from serotonin. If you don’t have enough serotonin the amount of melatonin you produce will be decreased.
Your sex hormones, estrogen, progesterone and testosterone are produced in larger quantities when you are relaxed and not under stress. Just think about the cavemen again. When you’re running from a T-Rex you better have more adrenaline than you do sex hormones! But once you got away and ate your delicious meal you just killed, those sex hormones would kick in and there would be a hot time in the ol’ cave that night.
Hormone Replacement Therapy
Hormone replacement therapy has been around a long time. As women age sex hormones decrease. This only makes sense. After your child bearing years you don’t need high levels of hormones so they should start to decrease right? While this is true, the amount of hormones most women produce is not even close to what they need to stay well. These problems weren’t a big issue for women centuries ago. The average age of death for women was below age 50 until the late 1800s. Women worked extremely hard, had babies, continued to work extremely hard then died. It wasn’t until modern healthcare evolved that the average age of death for both men and women began to rise.
Women’s bodies continue to change after child bearing years. Some women in their early 30s begin having symptoms of perimenopause. Perimenopause means before menopause. You start having hot flashes, become moody, and lose interest in sex. Your hormone levels are beginning to go up and down. These problems occur for many reasons. But it doesn’t have to be that way!
Another common problem women have is breakthrough bleeding or spotting during the middle of their menstrual cycle. This is usually a problem related to a hormone imbalance between estrogen and progesterone. Estrogen should be dominant in the first half of the menstrual cycle and progesterone should be dominant in the second half of the cycle. Breakthrough bleeding is a symptom of estrogen dominance in the second half of the menstrual cycle.
The normal menstrual cycle is twenty-eight days. The day a woman starts bleeding is day one of her menstrual cycle. During the first fourteen days your ovaries increase the amount of estrogen they produce. Estrogen builds up the lining of your uterus so an egg can be implanted in your uterus. Around day fourteen one of your two ovaries produces a mature egg. The sack around the egg begins to produce progesterone. Progesterone gets the egg ready for fertilization. If fertilization does not occur by about day twenty-two the progesterone and estrogen levels begin to fall rapidly and by day twenty-eight the lining of the uterus is ready to be expelled and the cycle starts all over again.
In the 1950s and 1960s pharmaceutical companies began to develop drugs designed to help women with menstrual problems. These companies isolated parts of horse estrogen from pregnant mare’s urine. This drug became known as Premarin. Pregnant horse urine is also used to make another drug called Provera. These two drugs were given in combination to women experiencing premenstrual and menopausal symptoms. These drugs are produced in a laboratory and work by binding to the estrogen and progesterone receptor sites in a women’s body.
I don’t have to go into great detail about the effects synthetic hormones have on women. The Woman’s Health Initiative began in 1993 to study the risks and benefits of conventional hormone replacement therapy in post menopausal women. This study was scheduled to last eight and a half years. But after three years the study was stopped because there was a 26% increase in the risk of breast cancer when taking Provera and Premarin in combination. There was also an increased risk of heart disease, stroke and blood clots in the lungs.
A United Kingdom study published in August of 2003 in Lancet stated the most dangerous hormone replacement therapy combination was horse estrogen and progestin given in combination. This combination was responsible for about 75% of the breast cancer cases of the last decade in the United Kingdom.
Over the last five to ten years many women have turned to bioidentical
hormone replacement therapy. These hormones exactly match what your body
produces naturally. The hormones produced by pharmaceutical companies are not
exact matches. Your hormone receptors respond to geometry not to chemistry. This
means synthetic hormones have the right structure but not the right chemistry.
Synthetic hormones don’t have the same downstream effects on your body natural
or bioidentical hormones do. Why? Because natural hormones trigger hundreds if
not thousands of processes once the hormone binds to a receptor site. A synthetic
hormone binds to the receptor site and that’s it. It doesn’t trigger the same
downstream processes to occur.
I’m not going to lie to you.
Real life Wellness isn’t for everybody. This isn’t a magic pill or the latest miracle
diet of the stars. This is a program you create. This program takes planning and
effort on your part to get the results you deserve.
“Planning – not sheer willpower – is the key to losing weight for good. Think about how your current behavior fits into your planning. Planning is crucial to success.”
American Heart Association Inc. website
You are probably asking yourself, “Why hasn’t my doctor told me about this
stuff? If these are things I needed to know, they would have told me about it,
right?” Well, maybe. Remember, you only go to the doctor when you’re sick.
When was the last time you went to your doctor to stay well? Our current medical
system is not designed to create wellness; it is designed to treat sickness. When
you’re sick your doctor knows exactly what to do. But when you’re trying to
stay well; it’s not such an easy answer.
This is why our society continues to move away from wellness. Our culture
is more obese and out of shape than any other time in history. A recent study at
Michigan State University stated that only 3 percent of Americans are living a
“healthy” lifestyle. I can believe it. It is not easy at all to eat right, exercise and
take enough time for you to stay well.
This is why you should take Real Life Wellness for a “Test Drive”.
“Many of the world’s leading dietary experts adopted one-size-fits-all dietary solution that they believe can be universally applied. While there are indeed certain universal truths, such as the danger of sugar and toxins, if one adopts this principle, my experience has taught me that a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work”

Author's Bio:

With a yell “I’ll save you” and a “Lloyd Bridges” style dive, my life changed forever. I was a 15-year-old practicing to become a summer lifeguard (chicks dig lifeguards!) But my dive angle was too deep and my head hit the muddy bottom of the lake with all the force a 6’1” 195 lbs. football player running at full speed could generate. As the electric shock shot through me, my survival instinct allowed my stunned body to float to the surface.

A few hours later in the emergency room, the sandbag on my head and the horror on everyone’s face spoke volumes about the severity of my diving accident. I had crushed a vertebra in my neck and was extremely lucky not to be paralyzed from the neck down. As I laid there in cervical traction, I knew my life had changed forever. To that point in my life, all I knew was sports. Football, baseball, basketball, and wrestling had ruled my existence. One dive had just taken that all away from me.

I have never been one to quit or give up. So, I thought, “What’s plan B?” In that hospital bed, one day after my accident I decided I was going to help people live better lives. I was 15, so I really didn’t know how, but I knew this was my life’s calling.

My middle class Midwestern upbringing proved hard work, a positive attitude, and a strong family can overcome any obstacle life can throw at you. Student loans and summer jobs produced a bachelor’s degree and a Doctor of Chiropractic degree before I was 25. My chiropractic decision evolved as I studied how I was going to help myself with my neck injury. I have always looked for natural solutions to problems. To me, drugs and surgery should only be used when all other options have been completely exhausted. Chiropractic creates a natural environment to allow the body to heal itself. That sounded good to me!

In my nineteen years in practice, I have studied many possible alternative healthcare systems. I have always had trouble getting the normal everyday person off the couch to give something new a chance. I finally figured out the best way to get people motivated is to let them create their own personalized healthcare system. But how can everyone create a personalized healthcare system for themselves from scratch?

In this book, I answer that question. Every person will pick up this book and take away something different. Everyone is in a different place. The key is to find where you are and decide where you want to go, and then go for it.

This is exactly what I have done in my own life. I have found a way to help people live better lives. I must use my knowledge, energy, and skills to fulfill the promise I made to myself lying in that hospital bed almost thirty years ago. I have lectured extensively on all of these wellness principles. I write a weekly wellness column for my local newspaper and I’ll stop people on the street if I think they need some help.

So take the assessment, learn more about yourself, and use the action steps to make a difference in your life. You truly can add more years to your life and life to your years.
