Judges Critique and Commentary:

“…Good title, dramatic front cover: Good choice material for back cover

The writer has hit upon a very interesting concept and used it with good results. Quotations and sidebars have been used well. There is a nice variety of types of profiles.

This little book should have widespread distribution. It is a great reminder of those upon whom we depend. Counselors should definitely have copies.”

The Bricklayer

The sun rises at 6:30 a.m. on another summertime
Saturday, bricklayer Clarence Jeffers starts his workday.
Today he is assigned to a $3.2-million mansion in
the suburbs of Basking Ridge, New Jersey. The owners, a
middle-aged wife and her practically non-participatory
older husband, hired him to do the painstaking work of laying
one brick at a time for their castle-like home, whose
exterior is to be a combination of the off-white and tan-colored
bricks which were imported straight from Italy.

With his pile of Italian bricks and big bucket of gray mortar,
Clarence begins his bricklaying routine of stirring the
mortar a couple of times swiftly before placing each brick.
The mortar must be the right consistency and also the
right temperature; if the sun is too strong, the mortar may
dry out. So he must work quickly. He can lay and layer
about 20 bricks a minute, a pretty good time, but when he
has a job like this—a total of 1,000 bricks for the front
exterior alone—his work is cut out for him, especially
since the temperature is already 87 degrees. Clarence
prefers to work in autumn, when the weather is cooler
and not as rainy or snowy. But these wealthy customers
tend to do their renovations in the summer, it seems, and
Clarence cannot say no if he wants to retire anytime soon.
So, with his big bucket of mortar and shiny spade, he
makes his way carefully up the scaffolding he must
ascend, eventually all the way to the top floor, three stories
above ground.

By noon, the sun is out in full force, and the humidity
makes it feel even hotter. Sweat drips from Clarence’s
graying hair, as he wipes his tan forehead with the red
bandana he keeps stuffed in the back pocket of his blue
jean overalls. In another hour he probably will have to
take his tank top off, he thinks. Otherwise, he’ll be soaked
with perspiration. He grows uncomfortable at the
prospect of the demanding wife, who peers at him lasciviously,
especially when he has taken off his shirt.
Unfortunately, as he must start bricklaying from the bottom
up, he often winds up on the top floor—where her
bedroom is—when the temperature has reached its alltime
daily high and he needs to disrobe even a little just to
continue his efficient pace. The lady of the house seems
to always purposely plant herself on her cavernous kingsized
bed, with its shiny lavender sheets. She is decked
out in lacy black lingerie and licks her lips. Clarence has
asked his boss to send him elsewhere, but to no avail. His
boss just snickers whenever he relays his discomfort. “You
should be so lucky,” he sneers at Clarence. “Plus, Mrs.
Anderson is one of our most reliable customers, and she
requested you.”

Clarence feels caught between a brick and a hard place.
Even mentioning his sweet wife Melissa and their four
grown children does not seem to deter the mistress of this
monstrosity at 15 McDougal Lane. He thinks that it might
be time to call Dave, his neighbor in Bay Ridge, who owns
a corporate construction company, to see if he can get out
of this residential line of work. The money may be good,
but the customers can make his days too trying. He’s afraid
that if he turns Mrs. Anderson down again, she will have
him fired anyway. In the meantime, he keeps plodding
away—ivory brick, mortar, tan brick, mortar, ivory brick
again, and on and on. This unquestionable dedication and
expertise is precisely why Clarence and all the other bricklayers
are worthwhile persons in more ways than a million!
