The Bucket List. From the moment we are born, we are dying. Of course, for the first few years of our life, we have zero awareness of this fact; we are not aware of much actually, but we live in a state of ignorant bliss regarding our mortality. Then, as we approach what feels like eternal adolescence, time creeps to a crawl, and it seems we can hear each second ticking slowly…tick, tock, never arriving at the witching hour of adulthood. But then it does, and there we are caught up in a river of time, when there seems to be no feeling of time, just the knowledge that we are flowing through life without much time to think, a time full of obligations and commitments. Finally, there is middle and old age when time is now on hyper-drive: we barely have begun a year, a month, a week , a day before it is over and this despite having less “ must do items” on the daily life list. That’s when thoughts turn inward to wishes, dreams, causes, things left undone, unsaid and unrealized. If you add to that a chronic illness, and “wham” you now wish time would just slooooow down, as your hear its winged chariot approaching. No longer oblivious to the way of all flesh, you know what’s coming, your irrefutable demise, a fact that you were wholly indifferent to just a few years ago. What to do? Sit and mope. Not a chance. Again, “action” is the key word. It is high time to check your bucket list. Yes, that’s bucket as in “kick the bucket.” For inspiration, watch the movie The Bucket List with Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman and use it either as a personal jump-off point or to open a conversation among your nearest and dearest to discover what is or what should be on your and their bucket list.
