If a survey were taken, it would be unlikely that anyone asked would say that they would rather not have a healthy and strong immune system. However, that is basically what people are saying when they fill their bodies with junk food and fail to exercise or get enough of the recommended vitamins and minerals their body needs.

The human immune system is made up of three major components: the thymus, the spleen and the lymphatic. New born babies rely heavily on the thymus to keep their immune system healthy while adults can survive without it. They can also survive without a spleen. However, they become more susceptible to illness. The spleen destroys old red blood cells and filters blood through the body. Like blood vessels, the lymphatic system flows through the entire body. It carries a clear liquid called lymph. The lymphatic system carries nutrients and fluids throughout the body. It also knows when the body is carrying unwanted bacteria.

A newly discovered berry called the acai fruit is believed to be the next innovation in protecting the immune system. With the physical characteristics of a grape, the acai fruit comes from the Amazon rainforest and is rumored to be very nutritious. In fact, it is believed to be one of the world’s healthiest fruits. It is extremely high in fiber and is thought to help with digestion and reduce cholesterol. More importantly, however, the acai fruit is high in antioxidants. It contains more antioxidants than blueberries and is more powerful than red grapes. It can also give you more energy and slow the aging process.

Today stress is at the forefront of why some people find themselves not feeling well, or have a lack of energy and even moodiness. Stress can wreak havoc on your system and therefore leaving it weak to fight off free radicals. Pollution, lifestyle, processed foods, stress and more can be contributing factors to why your immune system isn’t running at top performance.

There are several things you can do to that may help keep your immune system healthy and strong.
•Eat healthy – It’s important what you put into your body. Make healthy choices and eat well balanced meals.
•Get enough rest – Your body needs 6-8 hours of sleep every night to release stress and re-build your immune system.
Exercise – a consistent exercise program will not only strengthen your immune system, but will give you more energy and will release stress.
•Get enough vitamin C – 1000-2000 mg daily may decrease your risk of developing a cold.
•Drink plenty of water – staying hydrated will keep you healthy. Drinking at least 6-8 full glasses of water every day will keep your hydrated.
•Take a mineral supplement – many people don’t get enough zinc in their diet. This affects the immune system. Some foods high in zinc include pumpkin seeds, lean beef and oysters.
•Limit your alcohol and caffeine intake – this can interfere with the immune system.

Taking these steps to care for your body is critical to keeping you healthy, giving you energy, slowing the aging process and living longer. Who doesn’t want a healthier, happier, longer life?
