There is a lot of attention being put on internet marketing these days… search engine optimization (or SEO), social networking, podcasting, vlogging, blogging, RSS, email marketing, article marketing, etc. And more tactics are being added at an astonishing rate!

So how do you determine the best way to market your business online? And, more importantly, how do you get started?

Here are some simple tips you can follow to reduce the feeling of overwhelm and leverage one of the most important communications technologies ever invented for the benefit of your business, starting today.

Online Marketing Tip #1 – Take It Slow!
Sure, in our hyper-connected world with instant-everything, slowing down hardly seems like the best way to leverage a technology that seems to be based on pure speed, but if you want to avoid feeling overwhelmed that is exactly what you must do.

You don’t need to do everything all at once. In fact, if you try it that way, you’ll quickly burn out and give up. Better to focus on one or two core activities and do them well and then add new tactics one at a time.

My suggestion? Dedicate one hour per day maximum to marketing your business online, but make sure you allocate time every single day. Even 30 minutes will be enough to start.

Online Marketing Tip #2 – Start With Article Marketing
Article marketing will have a double benefit, which is why it is a good place to start. First you will provide valuable content that is laser targeted at your primary audience and which contains a link directing them back to your site for more information, resources, etc.

Second, you will create an expert persona online that will reinforce your position as an expert in your field. More often than not, people will search for either you (if you are selling your services) or your product name prior to or immediately upon making a purchase. Having a lot of links come up when you search for your name or product name will reinforce your knowledge and expertise and create a higher degree of trust.

Articles you write should be focused and clear, well-written and practical. Use this article as an example. It is centered on a particular topic and is broken down into easy to follow tips. A good article will run approximately 300 – 600 words.

There are several article directories you can choose from, but my favorites are ezinearticles.com, selfgrowth.com and goarticles.com. All allow you to include a bio or “resource” box at the bottom of your article with information about you and a link back to your site.

Online Marketing Tip #3 – Join The Conversation!
Make it a point to spend time each day in areas where your target audience congregates to talk about the solution you offer. For example, if you are a marketing coach (like I am) you might want to visit forums and blogs that are related to small business marketing. If you are a dog psychologist, then you’ll want to hang around in dog behavior discussions.

You can find these online areas by searching at your favorite search engine for “your keywords” +forum or +blog or log in to Facebook and search there. To find relevant forums for my business, I would search for “small business marketing forum”.

When you join the conversation you may want to just “lurk” for awhile until you get to know the unwritten (and sometimes written) rules of engagement. Whatever your approach, you want to add to the conversation by offering the advice you know is helpful. Again, think of this article – practical & useful.

Don’t blatantly start advertising or link-spamming (posting junk articles just to get your signature all over the place) but do offer a way for people to get more information. Again, follow the custom of the blog or forum you’re participating in and you’ll do just fine.

Follow these tips and make it a habit to do small things every day and you’ll soon see your internet traffic begin to increase. As you become comfortable with these tactics, then begin adding in other, more advanced strategies such as creating an account on Twitter, Facebook group or using LinkedIn Questions.
