The competition selling affiliate products is fierce. ClickBank alone has over 100,000 affiliates. Given that level of competition, what is the best way to get an edge and make money? The best way to make money with affiliate programs is through the use of a list. In fact, having a list will benefit you and increase your income regardless of what type of Internet program you employ. Even most brick and mortar businesses use lists. Your doctor has a list of patients. Your stockbroker and lawyer have lists of clients. Your car dealer keeps a list of customers. Almost every type of successful business maintains a list.

If you want to run a successful Internet business, you should take a lesson from these successful ventures and build your own list. Although maintaining a list will require some work, it can effectively double (or even triple) your income over the long term.

If you are not convinced about the value of a list, consider the following example: Someone clicks on one of your affiliate links and is taken to the merchant’s sales page. After reading most of the sales page, your prospect is leaning toward making a purchase, but not totally convinced. Suddenly, his concentration is interrupted by a phone call and he leaves the computer.

A week later, he enters a search for the product that you almost sold him. He clicks on the first link that he finds, but it is not yours. He goes to the merchant’s page through your competitors link and buys the product. Your competitor gets credit for the sale and you make nothing.

Without a list, you only had one shot at that prospect. Because of circumstances beyond your control, you lost the sale and that prospect forever. That prospect will never buy anything from you.

If you had a list and the same circumstances happened, you still would have lost that sale. BUT, because you are emailing him attractive affiliate offerings every two weeks, you will have another opportunity to sell him something. In fact, if this prospect remains on you list for nine months, you have 17 additional opportunities to make a sale. Having a list increases your chances of making a sale by 17 fold over your non-list building competitor. And isn’t that what it is all about? Getting a competitive edge and making money?
