Are you a writer? Then you've probably experienced writer's block. It happens to us all more often then not.
So what can you do to combat this common issue? There are many different approaches to help in this situation which I'll list throughout this article.
Whenever I'm at a loss for words, I quickly refer back to notes I've written throughout the week. These notes can be anything from a simple phrase I've conjured up in my brain, or from something I've read or anything in between that caught my attention. Sometimes, I may even scan business articles that may trigger a thought or an experience that can convert to writing a post. Hopefully, it will be written in a way that will benefit my reader as well. I may also write a draft article, revisit it, edit it, and revise it until my hearts content and I'm ready to publish. Other times, I'll use a guest post article that I've enjoyed reading to help fill in the gap.
Whatever the reason may be, below I've listed techniques that's helped me overcome writer's block:
1. Every day life experiences
- There is never a dull moment in my life. With a business to run, raising two kids and running all over the place, I am bound to find something interesting to talk about. I may or may not write about the specifics but it certainly inspires me to create a piece of written work that I can incorporate into my blogs. Find something that may trigger your own writing juices in your daily life experiences and before you know it, an article is born.
2. Business magazines
- I enjoy reading anything from business magazines to a great motivating and inspiring book. Reading is a constant routine in my home; so much so, that my 10 year old son reads at least 4 books in a month...and thankfully he enjoys it! :) I find that when I read, thoughts and ideas are immediately attached to my writing style and may become valuable content for the next blog article.
3. Notes, notes & more notes
- I love my IPAD notes application (If you don't have an IPAD, a simple notebook will do the trick). I am constantly on my IPAD jotting down notes. It can be anything from a simple phrase to a paragraph and/or a specific word that can help me with an article title or summary. Notes help me keep track of thoughts and ideas.
4. Research
- Depending on the blog niche, researching for information that may help create an article in your own writing style is important. There are times when I may need to research information on a particular topic that I want to share with my readers. Researching allows me to make sure I am providing the most accurate and current resources to my readers for the intent of the written article.
5. Guest post
- Guest posting is an excellent way to help fill in the gap when writer's block has taken its toll. Whether you're busy or just not in the mood to write, guest blog posting is key. Make sure the guest post article compliments the blog theme and will benefit the reader. Don't just post for the sake of posting. Loyal readers will know the difference. Provide guest post articles that are relevant and sticky to the blogs niche.
I hope the above 5 Tips to Overcome Writer's Block will help you unblock the writer in you!
