5 Things to do when the economy rebounds
Written by Pat Esposito
When the ship is going down, it is hard to think about your favorite restaurant, television show, or movie. As the old poem goes:
When the ship is sinking
I ‘m not thinkingr
I don’t care about thrivingr
Just surviving
A lot of it makes sense. Why think about that great vacation to Hawaii you would love to go on when you can’t even afford to go out for pizza. When times are tough, we tend to focus on the here and now as opposed to the future. Always remember, when times are tough, they will always get better. When times are good, prepare for that rainy day. This economy will rebound; no doubt about it. Many people will make their fortunes due to this economy. You may be one of those people. How can you ensure that you will be one of those people? Start to prepare now, mentally, for when the economy turns around. For starters, list five things you would like to do when things get better financially. Here is a suggested list, but your own would be much more effective:
1. Go out to eat at your favorite restaurant or at a restaurant that you always wanted to go to but, was out of your price range at the time. And of course, order whatever you want.
2. Take a good look in your closet, give away, or throw away anything you no longer wear or wish to wear. After all, you need to make room for your new wardrobe. You deserve it; you’ve survived the tough times. Now look the part.
3. Does your home or vehicle require some deferred maintenance? Do what should have been done long ago. You no longer have any excuses. Depending on how good things are now, you may even consider remodeling the kitchen or bathroom.
4. Say thank you to those who have stood by you during the rough times. There are many ways to say thank you. Just don’t forget those who did not forget you.
5. Start to think about the future and prepare for that rainy day. Consistently save money and consider where you would like to be in the next five to ten years and what you would need to do to get there.
The sun will rise again. Today’s financial calamity will one day be stories that we can tell the young and those not yet born. We can try to explain why our national debt is so high and why those who had nothing to do with causing it are responsible to pay it. Yes, the national debt will affect all of us, but we all have the power to make our lives what we want it to be. Start to prepare now for the future. Always strive to be an informed investor.
