The past few weeks, we have been examining the benefits of decluttering and simple living. The studies make it clear that living a less cluttered life is beneficial not only for your mental health, but also for your family.

The problem is that so many of us have so much clutter. Where can you even begin?

Today I am challenging you to start establishing some good habits that will eventually lead to a calmer, less cluttered home. Choose any one of these decluttering mini-missions to help you get started:
1. Go through your closet. Seriously question anything that you haven't worn in the past year, and send it on its way to a non-profit thrift store (or to a friend who will appreciate it). You don't have to get rid of everything that you haven't worn, but aim to remove 5 items from your closet.

2. Tackle one kitchen cupboard. Question any appliances or cookingware that you haven't used in the past year. Aim to keep only 1-2 items that are only used once a year or less.

3. Eliminate one box in your storage room. This can be done by eliminating everything in the box, or by going through multiple boxes and consolidating the things you keep.

4. Get rid of equipment for one hobby you no longer do. Did you experiment with scrapbooking but find out it wasn't for you? Then now is the time to pass on your supplies to somebody who will use them.

5. Examine your media collection. Do you have DVD's that you no longer watch? CD's you no longer listen to? Donate them, or even sell them to a store that deals in used CD's and DVD's.

Decluttering does not have to be a large, overwhelming undertaking. By taking on one mini-mission a week, you will slowly begin to see results.
