What are some of the things you can do to deal with a disappointment? How can you keep yourself together so that the disappointment does not affect you so badly that you will become reckless with your life and take to alcohol or drugs?
In this article, I want to show you how to deal with disappointment so that you can move on to live a fulfilling life.
So, what strategies can you use?
1. Exercise
According to the Harvard Medical School, regular aerobic exercise can help to stimulate a person, as well as calm a person down.
Exercising will help to reduce levels of stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol, in your body. Consequently, you will feel less stressed as a result of the disappointment and that will help you to look forward to the future with hope and confidence.
Additionally, exercise will make your brain release chemicals known as endorphins, which are natural pain killers and mood boosters. These chemicals will help to lift your spirits and boost your mood so that you can think constructively about what you can do to move on in life.
2. Make Positive Affirmations To Yourself
If you are feeling nervous about what the future holds for you as a result of that disappointment, you can use positive self-affirmations to help you calm your nerves. Studies show that making positive affirmations can help one to improve his or her problem solving under stress, boost self-esteem, and increase self-compassion.
Therefore, you are more likely to reason out of the box to figure out a way to advance in life, you are likely to keep believing that you can still make it if you persevere, and you are likely to think more creatively to come up with ideas that will help you to progress, if you say something such as this to yourself often, “I am down but I am not out. The downfall of a man is not the end of his life and so I am not done yet. I will not let this disappointment discourage me. Better days lie ahead. I have fallen, but I will rise and succeed.”
3. Write Your Feelings Down
One of the ways to deal with disappointment is to write down your thoughts and feelings. This will give you a healthy outlet to release the pain and frustration of the disappointment so that you will experience emotional relieve.
Consequently, you will be able to manage the anxiety that accompanies the disappointment and you will be able to reduce the stress associated with the painful experience so that you can remain healthy to persist in life.
Therefore, pick up your diary or your journal and write down exactly how you feel about the experience. Below that, write down 10 of the major disappointments you have faced in life in the past, and how you survived those painful experiences.
And then ruminate upon the fact that you have faced disappointments and moved on before. It will encourage you that just as you were able to move on after those setbacks, you will also be able to move on after this setback. That will prevent you from becoming depressed.
4. Pray For God To Give You Strength
A study carried out by the University of Wisconsin-Madison has revealed that people who pray when they are going through rough times are able to manage negative situations and emotions, such as anger and anxiety, effectively, and they also feel comforted when they pray.
Additionally, when you connect with God with faith in your heart, you will feel hopeful when you consider that even though you have been disappointed, you have a Powerful Friend who can make new, and even better, opportunities to open up to you so that you can forget the pain of the disappointment.
So, pray and ask God to give you His grace so that you will be able to bear the pain of the disappointment without suffering a nervous breakdown. Furthermore, ask Him to make ways for you so that you will have joy.
Conclusion
To deal with disappointment, exercise often , make positive affirmations, write your feelings and thoughts down, and ask God to strengthen you so that you will be able to focus on the future with hope and excitement.
