3 Quick Tips to Stop Stress Related Food Cravings
Written by Alexander Sharp
On ordinary days sticking with a diet is a reasonably doable undertaking as long as a weight loss plan is sensible and does not involve starvation tactics. There are days, however, when the stress gets high and the urge to stray can become overpowering. After all, comfort foods are just that.
Whether the temptation comes from a bad day at work or home, there are a few quick tricks that can help dieters stay on track. Here are three of the best tips for fighting back against stress-related cravings:
Switch Up The Cravings
When stress-related cravings strike and threaten to derail dieting plans, they are generally focused on a certain type of food. Some people go nuts for salty, crunchy snacks. Others just have to have their sweets when stress levels rise. Rather than go for the bag of chips or the half-gallon of ice cream, consider smarter substitutions to curb the craving without ruining plans to lose weight. A handful of lightly salted nuts might knock out the desire to wolf down a bag of chips. A small frozen yogurt could nip the ice cream cravings. A bunch of grapes could solve an overwhelming desire to nosh on something even sweeter.
The key to overcoming binge-eating cravings is often found in simply giving in, but doing so wisely. Even a small snack that is healthy and similar to the craving can often do the trick.
Get Physical
When stress gets so high the urge to overeat presents, one of the best ways to knock out the cravings fast is to lessen the level of stress itself. Exercise is a fantastic way to achieve this. While basic exercises, such as running on a treadmill, working out to an aerobics routine, swimming or even sit ups and pushups can be effective for this, there are a few options that are a whole lot more fun in this situation.
Rather than do normal, boring exercise, consider more unusual physical activities to really try and address the level of stress, too. Some ideas include:
1. Hitting a heavy bag - This is a great way to burn a few calories, curb cravings and reduce stress all at the same time.
2. Dance - Turn on the radio or put on a favorite CD and just dance.
3. Play - If there are kids in the picture, round them up and just play. If not, do something fun anyway. Go shoot some hoops. Take a jog with a friend.
Meditate
Meditation or at least using deep breathing techniques can help combat the knee-jerk reaction to overeat very effectively. This can also help address stress.
When stress levels get too high, the urge to overeat and break a diet can overwhelm. There are many sound ideas out there to help dieters stick to their plan even in the face of adversity. These are just three of the many tips that can help.
