Terri wanted to be a Catholic priest when she was growing up, and when she found out that girls couldn't become priests, she had no idea how profoundly that would influence her life. Looking back over the 50+ years that have passed since then, she can see that her life has been consistently focused on tearing down the 'wall' between the sacred and the secular. Over and over again, she has refused to believe that there can be any such separation, despite the nearly all-pervasive social, cultural and religious conditioning that declares otherwise. (This is not to say that she has been courageously leading the battle all these years. The reality is more like she's been dragged kicking and screaming to face this hydra-headed demon again and again. It's gotten to the point that now when she recognizes what's going on, she can laugh--a little.)
For nearly half a century, Terri has studied and practiced a number of types of meditation, most notably in the Christian and Buddhist traditions. She shies away from accepting any label, believing in integrating wisdom wherever she finds it.
Terri studied Transpersonal Psychology as part of her doctoral program. This is the branch of psychology that acknowledges the spiritual dimension of human existence. Her current reading interests include science and technology. She is fascinated, awed and humbled by the vision of humanity that is being illuminated by these areas of study.
Terri has published short stories, essays and poems in national, regional and local publications. Her English composition courses are characterized by experimentation and play. She wants her students to have fun with writing, while at the same time respecting the power of language, what she describes as "the magical act that gets what's in my mind into yours."
Terri has also studied dream interpretation, taught workshops in this skill, and facilitated small dream groups. And acknowledging a debt to the Catholic Churck, which Terri says gave her a deep appreciation for the power of ritual--even if girls were excluded in her day--Terri has studied the elements of ritual and created a variety of ritual celebrations including a rite of passage ceremony for women who want to claim their calling.
Terri is a full-time professor of English at a prestigious avaition/aerospace university, where she is in charge of English and Humanities courses. She lives with her husband of 40 years, Eddie, and their dog, Lucy, on five acres of beautiful, rolling wooded land in southwestern Ohio. Terri and Eddie have one son and three grandchildren.
My mystical, secret, three-step process for having more peace in the midst of my busy life: Stop. Listen. Decide.
The paradox of slowing down is that you actually get more done. Or maybe you learn that you don't care about as many things as you thought you did.
My world is made up of stories I tell myself. The good news is that I can always tell myself a different story. But it has to be really convincing.
