When I was 21 my grandmother was dying of cancer.

I felt absolutely helpless, unable to offer anything except my love. As I sat by her bedside one day, opening mail, I opened a package from my cousins in Australia. They had sent me a little booklet on Aromatherapy. As I glanced through the information, I realized I had in my hands a tool, something tangible that I could offer my grandmother in these difficult days. I began to experiment, mixing up foot rub lotions, blends for nausea and pain etc, and, felt, in a small way, that it helped.

 

Shortly after that I moved to the US, having grown up in England. The experience with my grandmother had left me longing to know more about natural healing - to feel more empowered with the choices I made about my own health as well as a desire to facilitate healing in others. I decided to study Aromatherapy.

 

So began a year long odyssey through the many wonders of essential oils. The further I travelled into the many uses and properties of the oils, the more I was amazed at the power of these substances. I wondered why so many people turned to over the counter drugs, complete with their myriad side effects, when these simple, beautiful oils can be, in many cases, more effective, without the negative consequences. The more I learned, the more inspired I was, until I knew that I had to share this knowledge. In this age of over-dependence on drugs and doctors, I wanted everyone to know that they could take charge of their own health in a way that recognized their whole being, rather than just a collection of symptoms.

 

Since that time, I have continued to deepen my understanding of the oils. There is so much to learn and new oils and new research every year. I have been teaching for over 15 years now, and am so delighted every time I feel the spark of inspiration ignite in one of my students.
